pravishantaM tu vegena mArutAvalgitAMbaram |
pUrvajaM purataH kR^itvA kR^iShNaM kamalalochanam ||2-30-1
vaishaMpAyana said:
(O janamejaya), (The son of ugrasena (kaMsa) saw), kR^iShNa with lotus
eyes,
who approached (the arena) quickly, with his elder brother (balarAma)
in front, his clothes swaying in the wind.
gajadantakR^itollekhaM subhujaM devakIsutam |
lIlAkR^itA~NgadaM vIraM madena rudhireNa cha ||2-30-2
(The son of ugrasena (kaMsa) saw) the son of devakI (kR^iShNa) with
auspicious (powerful) arms carrying the tusks of the elephant. After the
fight, valiant kR^iShNa's limbs, were covered with sweat and blood.
valgamAnaM yathA simhaM vyUhamAnaM yathA ghanam |
bAhushabdaprahAreNa chAlayantaM vasuMdharAm ||2-30-3
(The son of ugrasena (kaMsa) saw) kR^iShNa leaping like a lion,
moving forward, like a cloud from a group of clouds, shaking the earth by
clapping his hands.
augraseniH samAlokya dantidantodyatAyudham |
kR^iShNaM bhR^ishAyastamukhaH saroShaM samudaikShata ||2-30-4
The son of ugrasena (kaMsa) saw (kR^iShNa) carrying the tusks of the
elephant as his weapon. With his pale face, kaMsa looked at kR^iShNa
angrily.
bhujAsaktena shushubhe gajadantena keshavaH |
chandrArdhabimbasaMsakto yathaikashikharo giriH ||2-30-5
keshava (kR^iShNa) dazzled with the tusks of the elephant in his hands,
like a mountain with only one peak, supporting the half moon.
valgamAne tu govinde sa kR^itsnoragasAgaraH |
janaughapratinAdena pUryamANa ivAbabhau ||2-30-6
As govinda (kR^iShNa) leaped about, the arena, looking like an ocean
(with people) was filled with sounds and echoes from the crowd.
tataH krodhAbhitAmrAkShaH kaMsaH paramakopanaH |
chANUramAdishadyuddhe kR^iShNasya sumahAbalam ||2-30-7
Then kaMsa with his eyes, red with anger, being extremely angry ordered
the powerful chANUra to fight with kR^iShNa.
andhraM mallaM cha nikR^itiM muShTikaM cha mahAbalam |
baladevAya sakrodho dideshAdrichayopamam ||2-30-8
kaMsa also angrily ordered the cunning, powerful, mountain like andhra
wrestler muShTika to fight with baladeva (balarAma).
kaMsenApi samAj~naptashchANUraH pUrvameva tu |
yoddhavyaM saha kR^iShNena tvayA yatnavateti vai ||2-30-9
Earlier kaMsa had already ordered chANUra: You shall make effort to fight
with kR^iShNa.
sa roSheNA tu chANUraH kaShAyIkR^italochanaH |
abhyAvartata yuddhArthamapAM pUrNo yathA ghanaH ||2-30-10
chANUra with his eyes becoming brown with anger faced kR^iShNa to fight
like a rain cloud full of water.
avaghuShTe samAje tu nishshabdastimite jane |
yAdavAH sahitAstatra idaM vachanamabruvan ||2-30-11
The assembled people were asked to be silent. All the yAdava-s
together announced as follows:
bAhuyuddhamidam raMge saprAshnikamakAtaram |
kriyAbalasamAj~nAtamashastraM nirmitaM purA ||2-30-12
On the arena, the fight will be with (bare) arms as per the rules
(set by the judges) without any cowardice. It was decided earlier to hold
the fight without any weapons to show the strength (of arms) due to
exercise.
adbhishchAtishramo nityaM vineyaH kAladarshibhiH |
karISheNa cha mallasya satataM satkriyA smR^itA ||2-30-13
The experienced men should exercise with water daily. The wrestlers
should exercise with cow dung as well.
sthito bhUmigatenaiva yo yathA mArgataH sthitaH |
saMyujyatashcha paryAyaH prAshnikaiH samudAhR^itaH ||2-30-14
The wrestler should stand on the ground and fight against one at a time,
as per the rules set by the judges.
bAlo vA yadi vA vR^iddho madhyo vApi kR^isho.api vA |
balastho vA sthito raMge j~neyaH kakShAntareNa vai ||2-30-15
Whether the wrestler is a boy, elder, middle aged, thin or a strong man
standing on the arena, the fight shall be between people of similar
nature.
balatashcha kriyAtashcha bAhuyuddhavishAradaiH |
nipAtAnantaraM kiMchinna kartavyaM vijAnatA ||2-30-16
If the wrestling expert with bare arms fell the opponent by strength or
action, then the wise men should not do anything further.
tadidaM prastutaM raMge yuddhaM kR^iShNAndhramallayoH |
bAlAH kR^iShNo mahAnandhraH kathaM na syAdvichAraNA ||2-30-17
The fight between kR^iShNa and the andhra wrestler is about to start on
the arena. Why do we think that kR^ishNa is a child and the andhra (wrestler)
is huge?
tataH kilakilAshabdaH samAje samavartata |
prAvalgata cha govindo vAkyaM chedamuvAcha ha ||2-30-18
Then sounds (of talking) were heard from the assembly. Leaping about,
govinda (kR^iShNa) said the following words:
ahaM bAlo mahAnandhro vapuShA parvatopamaH |
yuddhaM mamAnena saha rochate bAhushAlinA ||2-30-19
I am a child and the andhra (wrestler) is huge, comparable to a mountain by
his body.
I agree for a fight with one having strong arms.
yuddhavyatikramaH kashchinna bhaviShyati matkR^itaH |
na hyahaM bAhuyodhAnAM dUShayiShyAmi yanmatam || 2-30-20
I will never deviate from the rules set for wrestling. I will not spoil the
fame of wrestlers who fight with bare arms.
yo.ayaM karIShadharmashcha toyadharmashcha raMgajaH |
kaShAyasya cha saMsargaH samayo hyeSha kalpitaH ||2-30-21
On this arena purified by cow dung and water, adorned with brown clothes,
all these regulations have been laid down.
samyamaH sthiratA shauryaM vyAyAmaH satkriyA balam |
raMge cha niyatA siddhiretadyuddhavidAM matam ||2-30-22
As per the opinion of expert wrestlers, control, firmness, bravery,
exercise, good methods and power are considered as the factors of expertise
in the arena.
avairamevaM yadayaM savairaM kartumudyataH |
atra vai nigrahaH kAryastoShayiShyAmyahaM jagat ||2-30-23
If I consider the opponent, who is not my enemy, as my enemy, I may have to
kill him and make the world happy.
karUSheShu prasUto.ayaM chANUro nAma nAmataH |
bAhuyodhI sharIreNa karmabhishchAru chintyatAm ||2-30-24
He is born at karUSha, well known with the name chANUra. Endowed with his
body, he has fought several fights. Wrestling is considered as his
work.
etena bahavo mallA nipAtAnantaraM hatAH |
ra~NgapratApakAmena mallamArgashcha dUShitaH ||2-30-25
He has felled many wrestlers in fights and killed them. By adopting wrong
methods in the arena, he has brought bad name for wrestling.
shastrasiddhistu yodhAnAM saMgrAme shastrayodhinAm |
ra~Ngasiddhistu mallAnAM pratimallanipAtajA ||2-30-26
The skilled wrestlers shall fight as per the rules and regulations.
If the wrestler fells his opponent in the arena, it is considered as his
expertise.
raNe vijayamAnasya kIrtirbhavati shAshvatI |
hatasyApi raNe shastrairnAkapR^iShThaM vidhIyate ||2-30-27
The winner of this fight will get eternal fame. He who is killed by a weapon
in the fight, will also get fame.
raNe hyubhayataH siddhirhatasyeha ghnato.api vA |
sA hi prANAntikI yAtrA mahadbhiH sAdhu pUjitA ||2-30-28
Both the killer and the killed get fame in the fight. That journey which
leads to death is honored by the good and wise alike.
ayaM tu mArgo balataH kriyAtashcha viniHsR^itaH |
mR^itasya ra~Nge kva svargo jayato vA kuto ratiH ||2-30-29
This method is by force and action. The one who is killed in the arena will
go to heaven. What is the fate of the winner?
ye tu kechitsvadoSheNa rAj~naH paNDitamAninaH |
pratApArthe hatA mallA mallahanturvadho hi saH ||2-30-30
Due to the anger of the king who thinks himself wise, if wrestlers are
killed, the killer deserves death.
evaM sa~njalpatAmeva tAbhyAM yuddhaM sudAruNam |
ubhAbhyAmabhavadghoraM vAraNAbhyAM yathA vane ||2-30-31
As they talked thus, a terrible fight took place between them. It was like a
terrible fight between two elephants in the forest.
kR^itapratikR^itaishchitrairbAhubhishcha sakaNTakaiH |
sannipAtAvadhUtaishcha pramAthonmathanaistathA ||2-30-32
The wrestlers pulled and pushed against each other. They felled, lifted the
opponent and dashed on the floor.
tAvubhAvapi saMshliShTau yathA shailamayau tathA |
kShepaNairmuShTibhishchaiva varAhodbhUtaniHsvanaiH ||2-30-33
They clasped together tightly like two huge mountains. They attacked with
their fists making sounds like two boars.
kIlairvajranipAtaishcha prasR^iShTAbhistathaiva cha |
shalAkAnakhapAtaishcha pAdodbhUtaishcha dAruNaiH ||2-30-34
They jabbed each other with their elbows and knees. They slapped and
attacked with nails. They kicked against each terribly.
jAnubhishchAshmanirghoShaiH shirAbhyAM chAvaghaTTitaiH |
tadyuddhamabhavadghoramashastraM bAhutejasA ||2-30-35
They kicked with arms and legs making sound. They hit with heads. A terrible
fight with bare arms, without using weapons took place.
bAhughrANena shUrANAM samAjotsavasannidhau |
arajyata janaH sarvaH sotkriShTaninadotthitaH ||2-30-36
In front of the assembly, like a festival, the valiant wrestlers dazzled
with their skill. The entire crowd enjoyed the fight, howling, shouting
and standing up.
sAdhuvAdAMshcha ma~ncheShu ghoShayantyapare janAH |
Some of the spectators on the platforms said, well done.
tataH prasvinnavadanaH kR^iShNApraNihitekShaNaH |
nyavArayata tUryANi kaMsaH savyena pANinA ||2-30-37
Then kaMsa with his sweating face, fixed his eyes on kR^iShNa. With a
gesture of his left hand, kaMsa indicated that the musical instruments shall
stop playing.
pratiShiddheShu tUryeShu mR^ida~ngAdiShu teShu vai |
khe sa~NgatAnyavAdyanta devatUryANyanekashaH ||2-30-38
As kaMsa stopped playing of musical instruments such as mR^ida~nga,
many divine musical instruments started playing from the sky.
yuddhyamAne hR^iShIkeshe puNDarIkanibhekShaNe |
svayameva pravAdyanta tUryaghoShAstu sarvashaH ||2-30-39
As hR^iShIkesha (kR^iShNa) with lotus eyes was fighting , the musical
instruments started playing themselves all around.
antardhAnagatA devA vimAnaiH kAmarUpibhiH |
cherurvidyAdharaiH sArdhaM kR^iShNasya jayakA~NkShiNaH ||2-30-40
The deva-s and vidyAdhara-s, who took forms as they liked, desiring
kR^iShNa's victory encircled the sky in their celestial vehicles,
remaining invisible.
jayasva kR^iShNa chANUraM dAnavaM mallarUpiNam |
iti saptarShayaH sarve Uchushchaiva nabhogatAH ||2-30-41
All the saptarShi-s standing in the sky said: kR^iShNa! Win over the
dAnava chAnUra, in the form of wrestler.
chANUreNa chiraM kAlaM kRIDitvA devakIsutaH |
balamAhArayAmAsa kaMsasyAbhAvadarshivAn ||2-30-42
The son of devakI (kR^iShNa) played with chANUra for a long time. Seeing the
end of kaMsa, kR^iShNa accumulated all his energy.
tatashchachAla vasudhA ma~nchAshchaiva jughUrNire |
mukuTAshchApi kaMsasya papAta maNiruttamaH ||2-30-43
Then the earth shook. The platforms also shook. The best bell fell off from
kaMsA's crown.
dorbhyAmAnamya kR^iShNastu chANUraM shIrNajIvitam |
prAharanmuShTinA mUrdhni vakShasyAhatya jAnunA ||2-30-44
With his strong arms, kR^iShNa bent chANUra, whose life was leaving.
kR^iShNa struck chANUra on his head with his fist. He struck him on his
chest with his knee.
nissR^ite sAshrurudhire tasya netre sabandhane |
tApanIye yathA ghaNTe kakShopari vilambite ||2-30-45
Blood and tears came from his eyes. His eyes came out like golden bells
hung on the arms.
papAta sa tu ra~Ngasya madhye niHsR^italochanaH |
chANUro vigataprANo jIvitAnte mahItale ||2-30-46
chANUra fell down at the centre of the arena with eyes protruding. chANUra,
lost his life on the ground, at the end of his life.
dehena tasya mallasya chANUrasya gatAyuShaH |
sanniruddho mahAra~NgaH sa shaileneva lakShyate ||2-30-47
Due to the huge body of the wrestler chANUra who fell down dead, the large
arena appeared as though blocked by a mountain.
rauhiNeyo hate tasmiMshchANUre baladarpite |
jagrAha muShTikaM raMge kR^iShNastoshalakaM punaH ||2-30-48
When chANura, who was proud of his strength, was killed, the son of rohiNI
caught muShTika and kR^iShNa caught toshalaka.
sannipAte tu tau mallau prathame krodhamUrchChitau |
sameyAtAM rAmakR^iShNau kAlasya vashavartinau ||2-30-49
In the first round itself, both the wrestlers, mad with anger, fought with
rAma (balarAma) and kR^iShNa under the influence of time.
nirghAtAvanatau bhUtvA ra~Ngamadhye vavalgatuH |
kR^iShNastoshalamudyamya girishR^i~NgopamaM balI |
They shouted like thunder and leaped about in the arena. kR^iShNa captured
toshala, who was huge like a mountain.
bhrAmayitvA shataguNaM niShpipeSha mahItale ||2-30-50
After swirling hundred times, he was felled on the ground.
tasya kR^ShNAbhipannasya pIDitasya balIyasaH |
mukhAdrudhiramatyarthamujjagAma mumUrShataH ||2-30-51
As kR^iShNa caught and kicked him, blood came out of the mouth of the strong
man, who was dying.
saMkarShaNastu suchiraM yodhayitvA mahAbalaH |
andhramallaM mahAmallo maNDalAni vyadarshayat ||2-30-52
The strong sa~NkarShaNa fought for a long time. The great andhra wrestler
exhibited many types of wrestling.
muShTinaikena tejasvI sAshanistanayitnunA |
shirasyabhyahanadvIro vajreNeva mahAgirim ||2-30-53
With one strike of his powerful fist, suddenly, the valiant balarAma
struck him on his head, like a mountain is struck with the weapon
vajra.
sa niShpatitamastiShko visrastanayano bhuvi |
papAta nihatastena tato nAdo mahAnabhUt ||2-30-54
His head cracked and the brain came out on the ground. The eyes came out
as he fell down with a loud sound.
andhratoshalakau hatvA kR^iShNasaMkarShaNAvubhau |
krodhasaMraktanayanau raMgamadhye vavalgatuH ||2-30-55
After killing the wrestlers, andhra and toshalaka, kR^iShNa and sa~NkarShaNa
leaped in the centre of the arena with their eyes, red with anger.
samAjavATo nirmallaH so.abhavadbhImadarshanaH |
andhre tadA mahAmalle muShTike cha nipAtite ||2-30-56
With the great wrestler, andhra and muShTika felled, devoid of the wrestlers,
the arena appeared desolate.
ye cha saMprekShakA gopA nandagopapurogamAH |
bhayakShobhitasarvA~NgAH sarve tatrAvatasthire ||2-30-57
All the gopa spectators, lead by nandagopa, stood at their places,
with their limbs trembling with fear.
harShajaM vAri netrAbhyAM varShamANA pravepatI |
prasravotpIDitA kR^iShNaM devakI samudaikShata ||2-30-58
devakI, trembling, with tears of happiness flowing from her eyes,
looked at her victorious son. Milk flowed from her breasts due to
affection.
kR^iShNadarshanajAtena bAShpeNAkulitekShaNA |
vasudevo jarAM tyaktvA snehena taruNAyate ||2-30-59
Seeing kR^iShNa, her eyes became full of tears. Due to affection, vasudeva
became young leaving his old age.
vAramukhyAshcha tAH sarvAH kR^iShNasya mukhapa~Nkajam |
papurhi netrabhramarairnimeShAntaragAmibhiH ||2-30-60
All the prominent courtesans drank kR^iShNa's face with their eyes
between twinkling (of the eyes) like the (honey from) lotus by bees.
kaMsasyAtha mukhe svedo bhrUbhedAntaragocharaH |
abhavadroShaniryAsaH kR^iShNasaMdarshaneritaH ||2-30-61
Between the twinkling of his eyes, kaMsa's face was sweating. Since he saw
kR^iShNa, fire of anger flared from his eyes.
keshavAyasadhUmena roShanishvAsavAyunA |
dIptamantargataM tasya hR^idayaM mAnasAgninA ||2-30-62
His heart was lighted by the fire of his mind, fanned by the air and smokes
of breathes of anger towards kR^iShNa.
tasya prasphuritauShThasya svinnAlikatalasya vai |
kaMsavaktrasya roSheNa raktasUryAyate vapuH ||2-30-63
His lips trembled and his forehead soaked with perspiration. Due to
anger, kaMsA's face looked like the red sun.
krodharaktAnmukhAttasya niHsR^itAH svedabindavaH |
yathA ravikaraspR^iShTA vR^ikShAvashyAyabindavaH ||2-30-64
From the face which was red due to anger, drops of sweats emanated, like
drops of dew from (the leaves of) a tree, warmed by the rays of sun.
so.aj~nApayata saMkruddhaH puruShAnvyAyatAnbahUn |
gopAvetau samAjaughAnniShkrAmyetAM vanecharau ||2-30-65
Getting angry, he ordered many servants with huge body: Expel these gopa-s
who live in the forest, from this assembly.
na chaitau draShTumichChAmi vikR^itau pApadarshanau |
gopAnAmapi me rAjye na kashchitsthAtumarhati ||2-30-66
I do not want to see these inauspicious and sinful people. None of the
gopa-s deserve to live in my country any more.
nandagopashcha durmedhAH pApeShvabhirato mama |
AyasairnigaDAkArairlohapAshairnigR^ihyatAM ||2-30-67
nandagopa of wicked intelligence sees me as one enjoying sins. Bind him
up with a metal chain made of iron.
vasudevashcha durvR^itto nityaM dveShakaro mama |
avR^iddhArheNa daNDena kShipramadyaiva shAsyatAm ||2-30-68
vasudeva of wicked actions always despises me. I will quickly order
punishment suitable for the old man.
ye cheme prAkR^itA gopA dAmodaraparAyaNAH |
hriyantAM gAva eteShAM yachchAsti vasu ki~nchana ||2-30-69
All these rural gopa-s depend on dAmodara (kR^iShNa). Confiscate all their
cows, wealth and whatsoever they have.
evamAj~nApayAnaM taM kaMsaM paruShabhAShiNam |
dadarshAyastanayanaH kR^iShNaH satyaparAkramaH ||2-30-70
kR^iShNa, valiant in truth, turning his eyes, saw kaMsa who issued these
orders with harsh words.
kShipte pitari chukrodha nandagope cha keshavaH |
j~nAtInAM cha vyathAM dR^iShTvA visaMj~nAM chaiva devakIm ||2-30-71
keshava (kR^iShNa) became angry when he heard (kaMsa)
insulting his father and nandagopa. He saw the sorrow of his relatives
and friends. He also saw davakI, sad.
sa simha iva vegena keshavo jAtavikramaH |
ArurukShurmahAbAhuH kaMsanAshArthamachyutaH ||2-30-72
keshava (kR^iShNa), valiant from birth, climbed up quickly as a lion.
achyuta (kR^iShNa) with strong arms, quickly climbed up to destroy
kaMsa.
ra~NgamadhyAdutpapAta kR^iShNaH kaMsAsanAntikam |
asajjadvAyunAkShipto yathA svastho ghanAghanaH ||2-30-73
From the center of the arena, kR^iShNa leaped up towards the seat of kaMsa,
like a still rain cloud in the sky, swept up by a strong wind.
dadR^ishurna hi taM sarve ra~NgamadhyAdavaplutam |
kevalaM kaMsapArshvasthaM dadR^ishuH puravAsinaH ||2-30-74
No one saw kR^iShNa leaping up from the centre of the arena. The citizens
only saw that kR^iShNa was standing near kaMsa.
so.api kaMsastathAyastaH parItaH kAladharmaNA |
AkAshAdiva govindaM mene tatrAgataM prabhum ||2-30-75
kaMsa, under the influence of time, was stunned. He thought that lord
govinda (kR^iShNa) has come from the sky.
sa kR^iShNenAyataM kR^itvA bAhuM parighasannibham |
mUrdhajeShu parAmR^iShTaH kaMso vai ra~ngasaMsadi ||2-30-76
Immediately kR^iShNa caught kaMsa with his arms, powerful as an iron
bludgeon. In the assembly of arena, kR^iShNa caught kaMsa's head.
mukuTashchApatattasya kA~nchano vajrabhUShitaH |
shirasastasya kR^iShNena parAmR^iShTasya pANinA ||2-30-77
The gold crown, decorated with diamonds, fell down from his head, when he
was caught by kR^iShNa's strong arms.
sa grahagrastakeshashcha kaMso niryatnatAM gataH |
tathaiva cha visaMmUDho vaikalyaM samapadyata ||2-30-78
kaMsa who was caught on his hair became immobile as though gabbed by an
evil planet. He lost his senses as if he was affected by a deficiency.
nigR^ihItashcha kesheShu gatAsuriva niHshvasan |
na shashAka mukhaM draShTuM kaMsaH kR^iShNasya vai tadA ||2-30-79
Caught on his hair, kaMsa lost his breath. kaMsa was unable to look at
kR^iShNa's face then.
vikuNDalAbhyAM karNAbhyAM chinnahAreNA vakShasA |
pralambAbhyAM cha bAhubhyAM gAtrairvisR^itabhUShaNaiH ||2-30-80
With ears losing the earrings, chest with broken garland, arms hanging
down and limbs losing the ornaments,
bhraMshitenottarIyeNa sahasAvalitAnanaH |
cheShTamAnaH samAkShiptaH kaMsaH kArShNena tejasA ||2-30-81
kaMsa, his upper garment displaced, his face leaning to sides, his body
trembling, was dragged forcefully by kR^iShNa.
chakarSha cha mahAra~Nge ma~nchAnniShkramya keshavaH |
kesheShu taM balAdgR^ihya kaMsaM kleshArhatAM gatam ||20-30-82
pushing him down from his seat on the platform, keshava dragged kaMsa,
who deserves to be tortured, to the arena, catching and pulling his hair
forcefully.
kR^iShyamANaH sa kR^iShNena bhojarAjo mahAdyutiH |
samAjavATe parikhAM dehakR^iShTAM chakAra ha ||2-30-83
The bhoja king (kaMsa) of great splendor, dragged by kR^iShNa, made
craters on the ground of the arena with his body.
samAjavATe krIDitvA vikR^iShya cha gatAyuSham |
kR^iShNo visarjayAmAsa kaMsadehamadUrataH ||2-30-84
As his life ended being dragged on the ground of the arena, kR^iShNa flung
kaMsa's body far away.
dharaNyAM mR^iditaH shishye tasya dehaH sukhochitaH |
krameNa viparItena pAMsubhiH paruShIkR^itaH ||2-30-85
His tortured body, used to comforts, fell down on the earth. In contrast,
the mutilated body was covered with dust.
tasya tadvadanaM shyAmaM suptAkShaM mukuTaM vinA |
na vibhAti viparyastaM vipalAshaM yathAmbujam ||2-30-86
His black face, mangled, with closed eyes devoid of the crown, stopped
shining like a lotus without the leaves.
asaMgrAmahataH kaMsaH sa bANairaparikShataH |
keshagrAhAnnirastAsurvIramArgAnnirAkR^itaH ||2-30-87
Without any fight, without being wound by arrows, kaMsa died by pulling
of his hair, deviating from the path of valiant men.
tasya dehe prakAshante sahasA keshavArpitAH |

killing him, kR^iShNa with lotus eyes, became doubled with qualities, due
to joy. kR^iShNa, after killing kaMsa who was like a thorn, fell on the
feet of vasudeva.
